*Automatic Scholarships - Institutional
*Automatic Scholarships - State, Regional, Local
*State Based Grants, Tuition Assistance etc...

This Section is Way Easier than it Sounds! We Promise.

Annnnnnnd...there's an added bonus. For our Non-SC friends, we're starting off briefly with 2 New States
(Ohio & Tennessee) just to show how simple it can be AND to keep our "International Audience" involved!
*****But Don't Get Too Excited*****
THE HIGHLY DETAILED examples for
Institutional, State, & Regional Scholarships; along with Locale-Based Grants, & Tuition Assistance
we will be focused on South Carolina.
But again, we're just showing you how it all works...and how to win! It really doesn't matter which State you're in.

So, What are Automatic Institutional Scholarships?

First off, THESE ARE ALSO KNOWN AS "MERIT AWARDS" (we may use the names interchangeably just to keep you off balance)

**Let's Keep it Simple**
*Automatic means everyone who qualifies gets it (no hassle)
*Institutional means received from the actual College/University
*Scholarship means MERIT (earned) out of High School
NOTE: They also have them for Transfer Students and sometimes for students who qualify in later terms

1. The GREAT MAJORITY of Colleges offer them, & they will appear in their online catalog (or website)
2. The standards are usually based on the following High School Info:
-GPA
-SAT/ACT
-Class Ranking
*Most Colleges require that you meet 2-3 of their benchmarks
3. THE GOOD NEWS---many Regional & Branch Public Universities offer "Above Average" Students $2-4k annually for HS grades in the 3.25-3.5 range (weighted) & SAT's in the 1100-1200 vicinity.
(We'll expand greatly on all these colleges in our "8 Types of Schools" section...but for now think Coastal Carolina, USC Upstate, Lander, USC Aiken etc...)
*Private Universities often offer even more---but of course the costs are much higher.
4. THE NOT-SO-GOOD-NEWS---the more "Well-Known" or "In-Demand" the college, the higher the standards for any Automatic "Merit Award". Many "Flagship" or "Football Schools" in your state will have MUCH HIGHER requirements than we just showed you above. To get $1k-2k a year at those Colleges you probably have to meet standards like these for the lowest level awards:
Top 5-10% in your class, 1350+ SAT, AND 4.0+ GPA (typically requiring all 3)
5. Now, if you are fortunate enough to receive a "Merit Award" YOU MUST KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO KEEP IT
(they are generally renewable each year unless YOU mess it up). First off remember:
* Roughly 40% of Freshman lose them after YEAR ONE
* 60%+ will lose them by their Senior Year
NOTE: With the majority of Colleges this is a ONE-SHOT opportunity. Unlike some State Scholarships, you most likely won't be able to EARN IT BACK.

*OK, now that we have your attention---here's what it typically takes to keep a Merit Award (College or State):
In most cases the College requires you to TAKE 12-15 HOURS per Semester and maintain a 3.0,
but of course, some are different. Just find out what it is---and keep it in mind EVERY DAY.

Simple enough right?

OK, now let's briefly take a look at those ex. Colleges from Tennessee and Ohio
*University of Tennessee Chattanooga
*Miami of Ohio
(both Public Universities)

Why these schools? Well, I'm from Ohio & my Daughter lives in Tennessee. Thus, those states now get their moment in the Spotlight!

First let's take a look at:

The University of Tennessee Chattanooga
(Wow, that was 14 Syllables...THEY MUST BE GOOD!)
You can see in the chart to the right that they have multiple levels of automatic "Merit Awards". The one we highlighted is the "Mocs Scholarship". You can't see it there but that is $3,000 annually if you had a 3.2 in HS and an SAT over 1100. Not crazy difficult to earn, especially for those that get bonus GPA points with any Honors or AP classes.
The next level is the "Provost's Scholarship" which now takes the PRIZE MONEY to 4k! Those parameters are pretty manageable at 3.4 GPA and 1200 SAT (the "Super Score" version).
*There are a few others, but as THE CASH goes up, so do the requirements. (Just click the link if you want to read more).

Next---you may not have noticed but there is a "Hope Scholarship" also listed on Chattanooga's chart (at the top). That's an example of an "AUTOMATIC State Scholarship" they have in Tennessee. It's available to ANY Tennessee HS Grad with a 3.0 and 1060 SAT. So yeah, they get another $4,500 per year.

So, to sum it up...$7,500 per year for a slightly above average student, NOT A SUPERSTAR!
An "Above-Above Average" student might net $8500 annually!

*So, $30-35k off the cost of a school that is ALREADY really affordable!
(and that's not counting the "bump" the Hope Scholarship gives you in your Jr. & Sr. years)

Next You've Got:
Miami University (Ohio)
(shout-out to the RedHawks & Ben Roethlisberger!)

*Their overview is so simple and concise it's kind of self-explanatory. Nice job guys!

*They clearly outline the Award Amounts for both Ohio Residents and Non-Residents, which you can see ARE VERY GENEROUS!

Now, this chart brings up something VERY IMPORTANT regarding YOUR STATE. Miami uses the "weighted GPA" on your High School transcript. For those in some states, you may not know what this means.

Basically, MANY States award more GPA points to
Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment classes that you take in High School.
IN SOME STATES:
-Honors Classes can add 0.5+ points to your grade (thus bumping GPA)
-Advanced Placement & Dual Enrollment might add 1.0+ pts per class

*SO YEAH, in those cases---a 3.0-3.5 GPA kinda becomes a lay-down for an Above-Average student. Many students are well over 4.0 in these states. Just sayin'. (Remember, my job is to keep it real).

Anyway, you can see Miami Univ. does provide a "weighted scale" calculation for you if you're coming from a High School or Another State that uses the "old-school" 4.0 version. Very nice. Thanks again RedHawks.

*As for any State "Scholarships", "Tuition Assistance", or Educational "Grants" to add to these numbers in OH, that's something we're gonna have to pass off to you. But, after the overview below---you'll know what to look for.

Now, Here's an example of a Regional Public Univ. with
"Merit Awards" in South Carolina

Coastal Carolina University

Coastal definitely did a VERY GOOD job w/ the layout in their online catalog. Below you can easily see:
* All the Levels of Automatic Scholarships available
* How much the "Awards" are per year (& they added the Out-of-State guys!)
* A really thorough explanation of requirements for each Level
* Lastly: you'll see Coastal's Merit Scholarship Levels for Transfer Students. This is great!
*That means you could go somewhere else year one---then move over for 4k per year until Graduation!

OK, Enough of the Institutional Stuff. Let's Talk
State (or Governmental) Automatic Scholarships!

*Good News! They are basically the same format...

Your High School:
GPA (many use "weighted")
SATs (or ACTs)
Class Standing Percentage

*Keep in mind that these are "earned", while the Community College and Technical College Programs are more of the "Grant" or "Tuition Assistance" format.

Now the fun part...don't hate, but South Carolina has some of THE MOST STUDENT FRIENDLY PROGRAMS---for any income level!

To Summarize SC Programs:
(so those of you that are envious don't have to review the entire chart below).

*SC uses a weighted GPA scale with the possibility of 0.5+ extra points for Honors Classes and 1.0+ points for APs & Dual Credits. So, when you see the GPA requirements...don't forget a 3.0-3.5 is pretty normal while 3.75-4.0+ is "Above-Above-Average" to Excellent.
Note: This is a really simplified version---it is a tad more detailed

*State "Automatic Scholarships"
(REALLY BASIC OVERVIEW---just for a simple "frame of reference", not all info/qualification variations depicted):

**HOPE Scholarship- $2800 (3.0 GPA) - Year-1 only
**LIFE Scholarship- $5000 (3.0, SAT 1100, Top 30%) - annual
**Palmetto Fellows Scholarship - $6700-$7500 (3.5, 1200 SAT, TOP 6% of Class) - annual

But that's not all on the Merit Awards:
*There's a "STEM" related "enhancement" annually on the LIFE and Palmetto Scholarships for Years 2-4 for Majors related to: Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math
*NOTE: there is also a Teacher "Service Obligation" provision that qualifies
**STEM "Enhancement" - $2500 - Years 2-4

So, let's provide an example using a:
*LIFE Scholarship recipient, Year 2, with a Major of Information Technology (STEM), AND going to Coastal Carolina University. For our "International Audience", please don't be mad!

$5000 - LIFE Scholarship
$2500 - STEM "Kicker"
$4000 - Coastal "Provost Scholarship" (Automatic) - ex. 3.5 GPA & 1230 SAT, or 3+ AP Classes taken

EQUALS: $11,500
Well---it appears Tuition is just about covered (for an "ABOVE AVERAGE" Student)!

Now, if you got the full Pell Grant (Lower Income - Lower Middle-Class Income):
$7395 - Pell Grant 2025-2026
$4000- Federal Supplement Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) - 4k is max (can be lower)
$3500 - OH YEAH, South Carolina has a Need-Based Grant - Max amount used- (can be lower)

EQUALS: $14,895
Well---now Room & Board is just about covered!
*Note: This doesn't even include any Need-Based Grants THE SCHOOL MAY OFFER. Make sure you ask!

*Now, Just a Quick SIDE-BAR.

We Promised You "Inside Information".
NOW YOU KNOW WHY HIGHER ED TUITION SEEMS TO GO UP EVERY YEAR (and why the Education BUSINESS can be a pretty "profitable" one---even for the so-called Non-Profits)!
The Answer: "OPM" - Other People's Money
Bottom Line: It's really easy to sell a high-ticket item when the consumer doesn't have to pay
for a large portion themselves---nor actually meet basic qualifications for credit.
Just food for thought...

OK, Back to Business. Simply put, SC has some Great Options... But So Do Others.
Now we need to talk about:
Community College & Technical College Programs
(30+ States have similar programs---so just check these out for reference)

But before we forget, there are many more details on the graphic a little further down which was put together by our friends at The SC Commision on Higher Education (SC CHE). It should provide all the basic info you need for the Scholarship options we covered already, as well as this Community & Technical College section we're touching on now. We added a few more highlights in the section below THEIR CHART, but of course that's still not EVERYTHING. Feel free to reach out if you have more unique circumstances!

Anyway---about those Community & Technical College Programs.
There are 3 we want to highlight in SC:
(Remember: your State may have similar options)

**IMPORTANT - THESE ARE NOT INCOME BASED - (They are For All Residents Who Meet Basic Requirements)
Note: Just a reminder---Community Colleges in SC are known as "Technical Colleges" (just in case you didn't see it elsewhere)

* "Lottery Tuition Assistance Program" - (LTAP) - STATEWIDE
2025: Up to $3600 Annually (Click Here for Details on LTAP)

* "SC Workforce & Industry Needs Scholarship" - (SC-WINS) - STATEWIDE
2025: Up to $5000 Annually (Click Here for Main SC-WINS Details)
(Click Here for well Outlined Programs & Guidelines from a SC School - York Tech)

* "Career Pathways" - Regionally Based - (Greenville & Charleston areas as of 2025):
2025: Up to $5000 Annually (Click Here for Details on Career Pathways at Greenville Tech)

The Basics on LTAP, SC-WINS, & Career Pathways

*Each can be used for 2-Year Degrees, Diplomas or Certificate Programs

-LTAP - Can be used for almost any Program at these Technical Colleges (but unlike the next 2---it can only be applied to Tuition)
-SC-WINS - Used for Specific "Critical Workforce Programs" (about 100)
-Career Pathways - Used for Specific "High Demand Careers" (about 100)

*So basically, SC-WINS & Career Pathways are VERY VERY similar. One note though, they can't be used for the BASIC Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees used to transfer to a 4-Year University. They must have a specific major and are typically known as:
APPLIED ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE degrees. Simply put: You're Trained and Ready to GO TO WORK.

*Question for you CollegeDawg! Are these "Stackable"? Why yes they are! Thanks for asking.
However--these are considered "Last Dollar", meaning you are not going to get the full amounts on top of other Financial Aid (or State-Based Scholarships). These cover "Core Academic Costs" - Tuition, Fees, Books, & Equipment required. You're not going to be getting additional COA money or leftovers for housing, transportation, groceries, childcare, Spring Break, the latest iPhone etc..
This leaves plenty of money for those just "GOING TO COLLEGE".

Example: If you're already eligible for:
Pell - $7395 (Fed Grant)
FSEOG - up to $4000 (Fed Grant)
State Need-Based Money - up to $3500 (State Grant)
*You almost certainly won't need any of these Programs at a Community College/Technical school. You'll already be WAY OVER basic "Core Academic Costs". Again, these are applied last to cover gaps.

Average Community College cost per credit hour averages about $200-$250 (varies a little by Location).
Now compare that to "Public Universities" which are typically in the range of $450-$650 per hour for South Carolina (we have been using $500 per Sem. Hour for simplicity in all our calculations). Go ahead and double that for Room & Board in most cases.

-Campus-Based Private Universities will typically be 2x on the tuition (on average) but do have "Institutional Aid" to offset that a bit.
*As you can see---there is no more "cost-effective" deal. Tuition normally averages $6000-$8000 annually (before the 3 Programs). But of course, there will be fees and add-ons for some specialties---which can be pricey. Obviously, you'll have books, fees, and sometimes Equipment or Uniforms (for programs like Aircraft Maintenance Tech, Dental Hygienist, Culinary Arts, Nursing etc...). Regardless, LTAP,
SC-WINS, & Career Pathways should have you well covered if you're qualified. Even if you're out of the Greenville or Charleston regions & have ZERO Pell or FSEOG Grants---just the LIFE Scholarship ($5k) and SC-WINS ($5k) would likely be enough for most Majors.

***Obviously these programs are A HUGE WIN for those who didn't get the Lower-Income Grants &
maybe didn't qualify for the HOPE or LIFE Scholarships! These Majors cover everything from
Business, to Healthcare, to Information Technology, and the more hands-on stuff like
"Mechatronics" (Robotics, Industrial Automation, & Logistics).

Simply put---they are the real deal!

OK, let's pause for a Quick CollegeDawg “Speed to Degree” Strategy Note:
(In Regard to LTAP, SC-WINS, & Career Pathways)

Considering all of the above about Community and Technical Colleges you may have realized there would be a good bit of money left over (unused) in many cases. Perhaps you could take 6 classes per Semester (18 hours) or some Summer Classes to knock this thing out quicker if the Program allows it. Depending on the "Major", it may cut off a good bit of time. Or perhaps you could take some additional classes to help in your Career (sort of like a "Minor"). Either way, as you've figured out on this site---you are often only limited by your creativity to make things happen. If things can be sped up; money can be saved; or there's a way to differentiate you in your Career---that's the Name of the Game!

OK, now that we've covered almost all of the BASICS regarding State and Regional Based Scholarships, Tuition Assistance Programs, and Grants---here's that awesome SC CHE chart you can use for reference (along with the link for more info). Take a look at it, then we'll end with a few Highlights and Supporting Info on this stuff!

Just a Few Things to Remember for these SC Programs

1. We didn't hit all the finer points - but are familiar with most. The SC CHE Coordinators & Managers for Scholarships & Grants have been kind enough to answer tons of questions for us. Thx guys!

2. Pay close attention to your College "FA Offer Letter". Recently we had 2 students that could've missed out on 8k and 14k respectively. The first was eligible for some FSEOG grant money and the second was a transfer student who was told "You don't qualify for the LIFE Scholarship" by his college's
FA Dept. And yet, LESS THAN ONE WEEK LATER he had it. It often pays to "know a guy who knows a guy".

3. The SC HOPE Scholarship is for 1 year - but YOU CAN move up to the 5k LIFE Scholarship with a 3.0 LIFE GPA at the completion of Year 1 of College.
(More on the "LIFE GPA" calculation below).

4. Contrary to popular belief, LIFE Scholarship recipients do not need to meet a 15 hour per Semester requirement. They just have to be full-time and stay ahead of the 30-60-90 hour requirement at the end of each respective year. If they came in with AP, Dual, or CLEP/DSST credits---those go toward the
year-end total cumulative hours and can put them WAY ahead of the game. However, LIFE GPA must still remain at 3.0 or higher.

5. The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship REQUIRES 30 Semester Hours per year (regardless of credits you brought in) along with an INSTITUTIONAL GPA of 3.0+. If you lose this, it's gone. But you can earn your way into the LIFE Scholarship when qualified.

6. We have mentioned that roughly 40% of first-year students lose their Scholarships after Year 1. BUT, as we highlighted above, the LIFE Scholarship
can be earned back if lost or can be awarded if the Palmetto or HOPE no longer apply. You'll just have to meet those requirements before it kicks in.

7. The LIFE Scholarship requires you meet any 2 out of 3 standards (GPA, SAT/ACT, or Class Standing). Palmetto requires you meet ALL 3.
*HOWEVER, here's one we missed initially. Upon High School Graduation, all the parameters above apply EXCEPT---YOU CAN earn/use the 5k LIFE Scholarship at a
2-Year Institution even if you just hit the HOPE Scholarship benchmark of 3.0 (by itself). That's an awesome deal...

8. If a student is in danger of falling below the 3.0 requirement (for HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto), they can take summer classes to get the GPA or hours up.

9. IMPORTANT: You will have a separate "LIFE GPA" calculation with the HOPE & LIFE Scholarships. As many people have experienced, when you change schools (or start with APs/Dual Credits) many Colleges just take the credits not the grades. THAT IS NOT THE CASE for the "LIFE GPA". Any College Credits earned (with a grade) will be part of the calculation. This includes Dual Credit HS or any College Class retaken for a better grade (in College). The first grade will count. So, be cautious with any "Academic Forgiveness" or "Grade Replacement" option (once in College) that allows you to take a class again using the 2nd grade and removing the first from the GPA. Not the case for your "LIFE GPA"---and it's sometimes the same with other "Merit Awards". Additionally, it may affect your required hours to remain qualified (since it's already been taken), AND it may affect your Federal Financial Aid. Just keep those things in mind! Lastly, APs. CLEPs, DSSTs, and Course Challenges are pass or fail, so they are not going to be in the LIFE GPA calculation.

10. You must be a SC HS Grad to qualify for the HOPE, LIFE, & PALMETTO (Scholarships), as well as the STEM ENHANCEMENT. However---with the Community and Technical College Programs it's just based on one year of residency.

11. All the Community College/Technical College Programs have VERY RELAXED GPA REQUIREMENTS to continue benefits. For the most part a 2.0 GPA will work, and a minimum of 6 Semester Hours is required. But keep 2 things in mind!
One, the money is adjusted if you take less classes (obviously)---AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, in some of the programs THE MAJOR RELATED CLASSES go in order with a "Cohort" of students (a group all starting the major stuff together). You may find yourself waiting for classes to come back around again---as they are often not offered but once or twice a year. Thus halftime (6 hours) doesn't mean 4 years instead of 2---it can equate to much longer.

12. Although NEARLY ALL of the Scholarships are automatically applied (HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto, STEM and even Institutional money)---on the Technical College Programs only LTAP will show up AUTOMATICALLY on your FA Offer Letter--usually. There are a couple other steps for SC-WINS & Career Pathways---but the acceptance is automatic once this stuff is completed.

In Summary---Just Know Your Stuff
(And Know it EARLY)

Even I (as a former Higher Ed Pro) didn't pay much attention to all the details on these things when my recent HS Grad was wrapping up his HS Career in 2024-2025. I can only imagine how many other parents (much busier than me) weren't focused on a large portion of this. I know our High School Counselors covered the State & Regional stuff via Parent & Student Info Sessions, Individual Meetings, and they sent home great informational flyers (like you saw above), but I'm convinced many of us parents didn't pay enough attention. Nor did we grasp the HUGE IMPACT THESE PROGRAMS COULD PROVIDE & how Certain Colleges could throw even more money our way just by meeting the same basic requirements. Hopefully by reading this, you've got a better handle and now know what to look for to:
"Beat the House" in Higher Ed!
